Local Dance Teacher Raising Money for Inverness Women’s Aid

Sophie Donald (27) from Inverness, is raising money for Inverness Women’s Aid by offering a 40 minute online ‘Dance for Women’s Aid’ class this Saturday, the 18th of April, broadcasted over Zoom.

The professional dance teacher hopes the event will inspire and empower women during this difficult time, while supporting Inverness Women’s Aid who are a lifeline to local families living with domestic abuse.

Commenting ahead of the class, Ms Donald said:

“When I learned that domestic abuse had a threefold increase in China when strict lockdown measures were introduced, I knew I wanted to do something to help, so I thought what better way than offering a fun and empowering dance class online that everyone in the family can get involved in”

“I’m hoping to bring people together to dance and have a good time all whilst raising money and awareness for Inverness Women’s Aid.

“I’ve been thrilled with the response so far, and hope that on Saturday loads of people will get involved, have a good time, and donate anything they can.”

Sophie’s fundraising efforts come as several domestic abuse charities, including women’s aid have expressed concerns that COVID-19 will have serious impacts on the lives of women and children.

In a statement on their website, Women’s Aid want people to know help is still out there.

“Survivors are telling us that they are feeling unsafe with the prospect of being isolated in the house with their perpetrator.

“We want to reassure survivors and local specialist services that we are here for you and we will be doing everything we can to support you during this challenging time.

“Try and keep a mobile phone with you at all times if possible.

“The police are a key service when in immediate danger.

“Do not be afraid to call 999 in an emergency.”
