Hundreds of views from attractions and homes across Scotland – including those from the Highlands – have been shared online as part of VisitScotland’s social media campaign #AWindowOnScotland.
From stunning views over Highland lochs to beautiful shots of Torridon, residents and business owners in the Highlands have been sharing their own unique view of the world whilst they are staying home – reminding others of what awaits them when travel restrictions are changed.
As part of the regional contribution, North Coast Explorer shared their image of a beautiful Caithness sky over the Pentland Firth; Hostelling Scotland shared breath-taking pictures of Glencoe, Glen Nevis and Torridon; Ardno House B&B posted a video of blue skies over Loch Linnhe in Lochaber; Foyers Lodge shared a beautiful shot overlooking Loch Ness from their dining room and Skye Connect posted pictures of stunning sunsets and kayaks on the beach at Knock Bay, Sleat.
Since the national tourism organisation launched the campaign three weeks ago, the hashtag has been used around 2.5k times across Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, creating a visual map of the country’s villages, towns and cities.
Scottish residents are asked to take a picture of a view from their property and post it on social media using the hashtag #AWindowOnScotland and their location (i.e. #Highlands, #Inverness, #Torridon)
The campaign has a clear stay at home message but allows everyone to show their part of Scotland to the world.
It was launched as day visits and staycationing are set to be the focus of Scottish tourism when restrictions are eased, as set out in the National Action Plan published by the Scottish Tourism Emergency Response Group, chaired by VisitScotland.
VisitScotland Regional Leadership Director Chris Taylor, said:
“We’re thrilled at the reaction to #AWindowOnScotland from residents across the Highlands and heartened that businesses and local people are getting involved with the campaign and using the opportunity to share their windows on Scotland with the world during this challenging time.
“The staycation market will be a key driver in the country’s economic recovery and the many wonderful views people have been sharing while they stay at home will surely be an incentive for many to explore a part of the country they may not have visited before, when the time is right to travel again.
“The campaign is far from over and we’d encourage residents and businesses to keep posting their views, to continue to help lift the spirits of those at home and abroad.”
